Why Mississippi runs 15% over the national average
Mississippi has Gulf Coast wholesale supply on its doorstep yet does not price at the cheap end of the region. The reasons are structural, not seasonal: where the fuel is fractionated, how far it has to travel the last mile, and who else is pulling on the same trucks.

Mississippi sits in PADD 3 (Gulf Coast), the country's propane-producing region, so wholesale arrives without the long-haul freight that loads Northeast and West Coast supply. But Mississippi is not itself a fractionation hub the way the Texas and Louisiana rack points are, so its at-the-rack price sits a margin layer or two further out than the cheapest Gulf states before any retail markup.
Rural-route economics across the Delta, Pine Belt and Hills.
Mississippi's residential propane base is heavily rural. The Delta counties (Bolivar, Sunflower, Washington, Coahoma, Humphreys) have low density and long miles between stops; the Pine Belt timber counties (Forrest, Lamar, Jones, Wayne) and the northern Hill Country (Tippah, Tishomingo, Prentiss) carry the same. Long bobtail time per gallon delivered lands in the retail rate, not in wholesale, which is why quoting a second local operator can move your price more than any national headline.
A storm-risk premium on the Coast.
Suppliers serving Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Pearl River counties carry higher insurance, reserves for tank washouts and bulk-storage damage, and post-storm crew-deployment cost, and that spreads across the coastal customer base. The June-to-November residential generator-demand surge also pulls inventory into the residential channel at higher carrying cost than steady-state delivery.

Delta grain dryers (corn, soybean, milo) and catfish-farm aeration, plus Pine Belt sawmill forklifts and process heat, create supplier capacity tightness on bulk routes from roughly August through January, exactly when residential customers most need a fill. On a route with heavy agricultural or timber demand, auto-fill enrolment puts you on the dispatcher's planned run rather than the as-available will-call queue.
Buying propane well in Mississippi: the moves that change the bill
The residential heating season here is short and mild, roughly mid-November through early March, with peak demand on hard cold-snap nights in January and February. A propane-heat home with no natural-gas service, most of rural Mississippi, typically burns 800 to 1,200 gallons a year across space heat, water heat, range and dryer.
