Florida against its South neighbours
Propane pricing across the South spans a wide band, from Gulf-production states with dense customer bases to states further from the pipeline and the gas mains. Florida's position at the end of the supply line and its thin, storm-exposed customer base can push the statewide figure around from one survey to the next. Within Florida, rural Panhandle and inland-citrus counties run roughly $0.10 to $0.30 above the urban Tampa-Orlando-Miami corridor because of lower route density.

Why Florida runs 82% over the national average
Florida is an unusual propane market for a state a few hundred miles from Gulf Coast production: a thin, storm-exposed customer base at the end of the supply line, where the statewide average can move sharply from one survey to the next. A handful of structural forces shape what you pay, and none of them is winter heating.
A peninsula at the end of the supply line.
Florida has no in-state propane production and sits 500 to 900 miles down-peninsula from the Mont Belvieu hub and Gulf fractionators. Supply arrives by rail and by waterborne movements into coastal terminals, then trucks the length of the state to inland bulk plants. Every one of those miles is last-mile freight that loads onto the delivered gallon, unlike Gulf-neighbour states that sit on top of production.
A thin, scattered customer base.
Urban Florida runs on piped natural gas and electricity, so propane is a niche fuel for rural North Florida, the Panhandle, the citrus belt, manufactured-home parks, agriculture, and the supplemental pool, generator and RV uses statewide. Under 5% of Florida households heat primarily with propane. A small, dispersed base spreads supplier fixed costs over far fewer gallons, and that overhead lands on every one.
Hurricane-driven demand spikes.
Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking August to October, and propane is Florida's backup-power fuel: it stores indefinitely and runs whole-home standby generators when the grid fails. Demand concentrates into pre-season top-ups and sharp pre-landfall and post-storm surges. Suppliers carry inventory, fleet and overtime crews for those peaks, then face flat demand the rest of the year, and that peak-preparedness cost structure prices into the gallon year-round.
Rural routes and seasonal-account overhead.
The actual propane customers are spread across the rural Panhandle, North Florida and inland-agricultural counties, so bobtail routes look more like rural Maine than dense Gulf-coast Texas: long miles between drops, low gallons per stop, and a high share of 100 to 250-gallon tanks. Layer on Florida's large October-to-April seasonal population, which forces suppliers to price partial-year occupancy into service contracts. Year-round residents who shop two or three FDACS-licensed quotes can claw back $0.30 to $0.60 a gallon.
Buying propane well in Florida: four moves that change the bill
A good supplier list is step one. In Florida the gap between a careless account and a well-run one is measured in hurricane readiness and pool-and-generator load, not winter heat. Here is where the money and the risk sit.

Confirm the FDACS licence
Any business selling, dispensing or storing LP gas in Florida must hold an FDACS licence: a Category I dealer, Category II dispenser, or Category V installer credential, each earned by passing an NFPA 58 exam and carrying $1,000,000 in insurance. Check the company against the FDACS LP Gas Licenses record, and report an unlicensed operator on 1-800-HELP-FLA.

Top up before 1 June
Wholesale propane bottoms out in spring and delivery routes are uncongested, so bring the tank to 80% before hurricane season starts. Keep it above 50% from June through November, and never chase a fill once a storm cone forms: routes pause 24 to 48 hours before landfall and can stay down for a week after. A 250-gallon top-up at this season's average runs about $994.

Quote the fees, not just the gallon
Florida spreads of $0.30 to $0.60 a gallon between national chains and local independents are common in the same county, and the real cost hides in the extras: tank rental, minimum-delivery surcharge, and hurricane-priority service fees some suppliers charge for guaranteed pre-storm delivery. Get a written quote itemising all of them from at least three FDACS-licensed suppliers, and say up front if you own your tank.

Where do the suppliers in your Florida directory come from?
Every facility in the directory is drawn from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) LP-gas licensing record, published through the state's open-data LP Gas Safety layer and captured on 6 September 2026. FDACS licenses and inspects the businesses that sell, transport, dispense, or store liquefied petroleum gas in Florida. The registry is broad: alongside home-delivery dealers it also lists cylinder-exchange points, RV dealers, and appliance sellers, so treat it as a licence record rather than a curated home-delivery list. Being licensed is a safety-and-standing check, not an endorsement, so still get two or three written quotes before you sign.
How do I confirm a Florida propane company is licensed?
Florida licenses LP-gas businesses at the state level through the FDACS Bureau of LP Gas Inspection, which issues six license categories: Category I LP Gas Dealer (and a separate Category I RV Dealer), Category II Dispenser, Category III Cylinder Exchange Operator, Category IV Dealer in Appliances and Equipment, Category V Installer, and Category VI Miscellaneous Operator. Dealers, dispensers, and installers must pass a written examination based on NFPA 58 (the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code, 2020 Edition) and carry $1,000,000 in insurance, and since 1 July 2024 a Category I dealer or Category V installer qualifier must show at least one year of verifiable LP-gas experience. FDACS inspects the storage facilities and investigates LP-gas accidents. If a company quoting you is not a licensed FDACS facility, do not sign, and report it by calling 1-800-HELP-FLA (1-800-435-7352).
When should I top up my propane tank for hurricane season in Florida?
Top up before 1 June, the official start of Atlantic hurricane season. Florida suppliers see a run on fills every May as homeowners prep generators, and again in any 72-hour window when a named storm enters the Gulf or Atlantic basins. Two rules: keep the home tank above 50% from June through November so a multi-day outage on a generator does not strand you, and do not wait until a storm cone forms, because supplier routes shut down 24 to 48 hours before landfall and may not resume for 3 to 7 days after. At the current Florida average of $4.97/gal, topping a 250-gallon tank from 30% to 80% (about 125 gallons) costs roughly $622; cheap insurance against running dry mid-outage.
How long will a propane tank run a whole-home generator during a hurricane outage?
It depends on generator size and load. A typical 20kW residential standby generator burns about 2.0 to 3.4 gallons per hour at full load and 1.0 to 1.6 gallons per hour at 50% load. A 250-gallon tank holds roughly 200 usable gallons (the 80% rule), giving 60 to 100 hours at half load, about 3 to 4 days of continuous run time. A 500-gallon tank (400 usable) doubles that to 6 to 8 days, closer to the realistic outage window after a major Florida storm. How much propane does a Florida pool heater use?
Heating an in-ground pool is one of the highest residential propane demands in Florida. A 400,000 BTU pool heater (standard for a 15,000 to 30,000 gallon pool) burns about 4.4 gallons per hour at full output. Real use depends on starting water temperature, air temperature, wind, whether the pool has a solar cover, and target temperature. A screened, covered pool used a few times a week burns roughly 80 to 200 gallons per month in winter (December to February) and very little from April to October. An uncovered north-Florida pool held at 86F can burn 400 to 700 gallons per winter month. At $4.97/gal that is about $398 to $3480 per winter month across that range. A solar cover cuts heat loss 50 to 70% and is the single highest-return upgrade.
How does propane work in Florida mobile-home and manufactured-home communities?
Manufactured-home parks are one of Florida's largest residential propane markets, and two models exist. In park-supplied setups the community owns a central bulk tank and meters gas to each home; you pay the park by metered usage and cannot shop suppliers, so the rate follows the park's contract with its fuel vendor and often runs a $0.40 to $0.80 premium over the statewide average. Florida's October-to-April seasonal population creates a usage pattern most out-of-state suppliers never see.
